THE CASE · 42 MM

Forty-two millimetres

A 42 mm round case in steel plated with 24 K gold — the proportions of a pilot’s watch, legible at a single glance. The large fluted crown turns easily, even with cold fingers. On the reverse, a sapphire caseback reveals the mechanical movement

THE DIAL

The sky at its very highest

Black lacquer over a grained base that can just be glimpsed beneath, with a fumé that deepens the edge still further. Eleven two-digit numerals and a faceted baton at every hour, applied in gilt metal, stand out against the black like the instruments of a cockpit. At 9 o’clock, the flat small seconds, snailed with concentric grooves, beats six times a second

In 1935 the military engineer Emilio Herrera, a member of the very first class to train at Cuatro Vientos, designed a pressure suit for ascending into the stratosphere in an open-gondola balloon. The flight was planned for 1936, but the war prevented it. Today his suit is regarded as one of the forerunners of the spacesuit, and since 2022 the Spanish Air Force has been known as the Air and Space Force
