crossed the Andes

Tadeo Haenke, a botanist, reached Cádiz too late and watched the corvettes set sail without him. He refused to give up: he crossed the Atlantic aboard another ship, was shipwrecked in the Río de la Plata and travelled on foot across the pampas and the Andes until he caught up with the expedition in Chile.
