THE CASE · 200 METRES

Built for the wipeout

A fall at 50 km/h against a wall of salt water demands an instrument conceived to absorb the ocean’s violence. The 41 mm steel case, the rotating bezel with knurled edge and a water resistance of 200 metres withstand the G-forces of impact, the abrasion of suspended sand and the corrosion of the salt spray. The oversized, luminescent indices are read in a fraction of a second, between the blindness of the foam and the glare of the sun

THE DIAL

The colour of the dune at dusk

A toasted sunburst that darkens towards the edge, like the damp sand of the Valdevaqueros dune when the Poniente wind brings in the Atlantic swell. The diamond indices and cream-toned hands warm the reading and make the Poniente the most inviting Hydra in the series

THE ORIGIN · TARIFA, THE 1980s

The wind
that gave the watch

its name

The Strait of Gibraltar is a geographical funnel: a corridor where mythology placed the Pillars of Hercules and where the terrain accelerates the wind until it becomes a physical mass, hard and tangible. Tarifa began as a fishing enclave battered by storms, but in the eighties a tribe of windsurfing pioneers discovered that this climatic anomaly was the ultimate canvas. Today the bay of Valdevaqueros is the wind capital of Europe, and the Hydra Serie 229 carries that extreme resilience over into mechanical watchmaking: steel, 200 metres and a legibility conceived to read the hour amid the spray
