THE CASE · 200 METRES

Built for the wipeout

A fall at 50 km/h against a wall of salt water demands an instrument conceived to absorb the ocean’s violence. The 41 mm steel case, the rotating bezel with knurled edging and a water resistance of 200 metres withstand the G-forces of impact, the abrasion of suspended sand and the corrosion of the brine. The oversized, luminescent indices are read in a fraction of a second, between the blinding of the spray and the flashes of the sun

THE DIAL

The texture of carbon

A black dial with a granular texture that drinks in the light like the carbon-fibre wings of a wingfoil. Upon it, diamond-shaped indices and white lume hands with small turquoise accents: the most tactical and legible rendition of the 229

THE ORIGIN · TARIFA, THE 1980S

The wind
that gave the watch

its name

The Strait of Gibraltar is a geographical funnel: a corridor where mythology placed the Pillars of Hercules and where the terrain accelerates the wind until it becomes a physical mass, hard and tangible. Tarifa was born as a fishing outpost lashed by storms, but in the 1980s a tribe of windsurfing pioneers discovered that this climatic anomaly was the ultimate canvas. Today the cove of Valdevaqueros is the European capital of the wind, and the Hydra Serie 229 carries that extreme resilience into mechanical watchmaking: steel, 200 metres and a legibility conceived to read the time through the spray
